Google Doodle raises a coffee cup of Joe for the 225th birthday of chemist Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge, who discovered caffeine.
Runge earned a medical degree from the University of Jena in 1819 and a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Berlin in 1822. He toured Europe for three years where he taught chemistry at the University of Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland) before taking a post as a chemist in a chemical factory at Oranienburg in 1831. From then until 1852 he worked for a chemical company but was dismissed by a resentful manager and died fifteen years later in poverty.
Runge’s chemical work included purine chemistry, the identification of caffeine, the first coal tar dye (aniline blue), coal tar products (and a large number of substances that derive from coal tar), paper chromatography, pyrrole, chinoline, phenol, thymol, and atropine. He, however, did not analyze any of these compounds. Runge described his pioneering use of paper chromatography in two books published in 1850.
It's discoveries like this that encourage us to celebrate the SCIENCE in STEAM Fest!
